The history of Mother’s Day

The idea of honouring mothers has ancient roots — the Greeks held spring festivals for Rhea, mother of the gods, and early Christians in Britain observed “Mothering Sunday” on the fourth Sunday of Lent, when people returned to their “mother church” and brought gifts for their mothers on the way.

The modern Mother’s Day we know today was largely shaped by Anna Jarvis of West Virginia, who campaigned for a national day of recognition after her own mother passed away in 1905. The United States officially adopted it in 1914, and the idea quickly spread around the world.

In the UK, Mothering Sunday remains tied to the church calendar and falls in March or April, while many other countries — including the US, Australia, and much of Europe — celebrate on the second Sunday in May. Regardless of the date, the sentiment is the same: a moment to pause and say thank you to the women who shaped us.

Tips for writing a Mother’s Day card

The best Mother’s Day messages are personal and honest. Here are some ideas to help you find the right words:

  • Say what she actually means to you. Skip the generic “best mum ever” and name something specific — a habit, a memory, a quality you’re grateful for.
  • Acknowledge the small things. The 6 a.m. school runs, the endless cups of tea, the way she always knows when something’s wrong — those details make a card feel real.
  • It’s not just for your mum. Grandmothers, stepmothers, aunts, and mother-figures all deserve a card. If someone has mothered you, tell them.
  • Humour is welcome. If your relationship is built on teasing and laughter, lean into it. A card that makes her laugh is a card she’ll keep.
  • Don’t wait for perfection. A few honest lines sent on time will always beat a beautifully worded card that arrives a week late.
